汽车诞生于1769年。当时中国正处于大清王朝的乾隆年间。这一年的1月5日，瓦特取得了“降低火机的蒸汽和燃料消耗量的新方法”这一专利。英国人瓦特发明蒸汽机，全世界从此进入工业时代。这一年英国人和西班牙人正在满世界航海，忙着发现新的殖民地。大清王朝也在忙着派兵从云南出发攻打缅甸，以使其臣服。而后来改写欧洲历史的拿破仑·波拿巴也于这一年在意大利西南部的科西嘉岛出生了。

当时欧洲还处于使用马车进行载人载物的时代。这一年法国在经历了七年战争后败给了英国，为收复失地急需增强军事力量，于是法国陆军提出了使用当时最先进的蒸汽动力来代替马匹，开发出运输大炮用的运输车辆。这个任务交给了时任法国陆军工程师的尼古拉·约瑟夫·居纽。居纽开发出来的用于拉大炮的车辆如下图所示，据说该车的行驶速度不足10km/h，而且在行驶试验中因转向失灵撞在了墙上，当时就损毁了。不过这也不影响其作为世界上第一辆汽车的地位，而且还是名副其实的“汽车”。
